John Kelly founded Kelly Building & Development Company in 1995. KBDC is the result of a career dedicated to craft and built on a foundation of knowledge and integrity. John was young when he started working in the construction industry. Beginning first with general labor, he then advanced to concrete and sitework. Summers followed with frame carpentry and home building adventures in Florida and Colorado. While working his way through Michigan State University, he held various internships and industry jobs. Upon his graduation from MSU with a BS in Construction Management, John set out to build his own enterprise.

John’s career flourished as his reputation grew as a hands-on, hardworking, quality builder. He quickly became firmly engaged in all facets of construction and development. His broad experience led him to own and lead several well regarded construction service enterprises. Since its founding in 1995, KBDC has completed over 150 projects with a net valuation of more than 200 million dollars. With over 30 years of experience, Kelly Building’s work has spanned single family, multi-family, and commercial projects. Known for honesty, craftsmanship, quality, and technical proficiency, the KBDC team has been involved in pioneering adaptive reuse projects in Detroit’s Midtown, as well as car dealerships, restaurants, boutique retail, mixed-use, professional and creative studios, and many beautiful residential projects.

John’s career, like his life, are mission based and dedicated to the principles of stewardship and service. KBDC is dedicated to sustainable practices and courage in leadership. In keeping with these beliefs, John has organized his business around the tenets of quality, design and integrity. Beyond business, John is committed and involved in the communities he serves. He has coached several sports, taught youth programs, served on neighborhood associations, school leadership committees, community development boards, and various philanthropic boards. Currently, John is serving an appointment by the Governor as Vice Chairman of the Michigan Board of Residential Builders and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors. Recently retired from the MSU Construction Management Alumni Association executive board, John was named MSU CM Alumni of the year.

John and his wife Michelle are the proud parents of five children. Ryan, Erik, Keegan, Claire and Jack.
